Such a weird game that. 10 minutes that changed the mood significantly. It was about to get quite toxic if that had remained 0-1.

We were particularly dreadful in the first 25. Surrendering the initiative and allowing a team which doesn’t keep the ball very well to actually play football. It was an alarming start. 

First goal comes from 2 players challenging for the same ball, which also nearly happened early in the second half. We looked slow, unfit, lethargic… every pass seemed too much trouble to move a yard to even receive it. 

Now did everything change after half hour? No. We did start to create some half chances and did start to keep the ball better and further up the field. But the same issues of poor tempo and general sleepiness remained. 

By mid way through the second half it seemed like we were never going to score. So many presentable chances just somehow not taken. One of them days. 

But here we are, the worst player still on the pitch was the one who scored both goals. After a turgid game where nothing was good from him, Hourihane then goes and shows everyone what he’s best at. 

Notes on a few individuals…

Knight better in midfield, and better in the actual middle, not as a supporter of the striker like first half.

Wildsmith was brilliant today. A few incredible saves, particularly the one in stoppage time at the end, and one pass first half to McGoldrick which Ederson would have enjoyed. 

McGoldrick is quality. Just wish he could shoot. 

Much better balance when NML came on. Think Roberts did fine but he’s not the most attacking fullback so why he was playing wing back opposite Barkhuizen was a puzzling choice, it was really imbalanced.

Sibley was ok but had a few moments where he looked like he was running in treacle first half. Kind of epitomised how sluggish we were.

Best performance I’ve seen from Collins. Actually hit some lay offs, and even a cross field ball which I didn’t think he had in his locker. He gave it a bit of b****** when he came on which I think the whole team needed.

Maybe, but Bird would have benefitted the exact same. Either could and probably deserved to come off. 

Thought he was pretty horrendous today. Looked tentative, dangling his foot in, let far too many balls just pass him by. His usual good set pieces even went awry. Really needed to be subbed off, and then he scored twice. Funny old game.

Is Josh Allen great? Right now, yes. Would I rather have him than Lamar? Potentially, because he is that good, let's see how Lamar is this year.

As for the racism, just google it. There's endless articles and analysis on it. Because it does exist, and has done for every single Black QB where the bar for athleticism and intelligence is far higher.

Lamar runs more than Allen even though he has had better RB’s at his disposal. The more you run, the more chances of getting banged up are. 

Allen rushed 122 times for 763 yards

Jackson rushed 134 times for 767 yards playing 4 games less than Allen.

You also have to consider Allen is a bigger guy than Lamar, plus the obvious bias as Lamar is your guy.

There’s institutional racism at QB, that’s just a fact. White ones are seen as smarter, more traditional QBs. Black ones are just athletes. Listen to every narrative and it’s still there like it has been since the NFL started, if you can’t hear it still then I don’t know what to tell you. It’s there every single time. Until you get a black Tom Brady, it’ll probably never leave - that said, they’d probably get knocked for being unathletic.

Your stats are meaningless when you missed the prime word I used, which is elusive. Allen drops a shoulder and creates contact, Lamar doesn’t. Both arguments, for what it’s worth, are useless because stats show you’re just as likely, if not more so, to get injured as a pocket passer than a running QB. Which is how Lamar got hurt last year. 

Something not quite white about the praise Allen's running into tackles gets compared to Lamar's elusive running.

Calling everything off is nonsense. The rest of the country still has to work, but chuck your bit of fun in the bin. Can I not work because I need to sit at home and be sad? The one place people can actually come together a bit too, should they wish to. Big game this. We will be fine at home, despite last week. We need to find a way to beat teams away, especially the bad ones. Bouncing back would be huge. 

It’s as bad as the big screen. A couple of huge dead zones on it now, and this season they’ve stopped showing replays until half time which is annoying. 

Wildsmith in net, Cashin at the back, Bird and Knight in midfield, Sibley behind the striker. Fill in the rest. That should be the foundation.
