What Cam Smith did yesterday is a thing of absolute legend - five birdies in a row is just insane. Hard to be too tough on Rory, he went round in under par every round but he was five and six shots of the two Cams on the last day, and you can't be that far off and expect to win. @kevinhectoring is right, it was the putting that made the difference but I think it's also fair to have history say that it was the number one putter on the tour, Cam Smith, that did it rather than Rory fluffed his lines.
For me, shot of the day was Cam Young on 18, to eagle it after nothing had been happening much all day, rookie in your first Open, leapfrog into second. Wow!

Interesting rumours I just heard - apparently Kemar will only come here if we agree to provide accomodation for his grandmother. It sounds legit - my source called it the Kemar Nan clause.

Zero criticism of Rory. He went well in 2-under, no dropped shots and shot 18-under for the week, a score which 9 times out of 10, wins IMO.
I haven't seen any criticism of Rory in the press to be fair, but it would be so British to criticise the player who comes third who has had a terrific season and been competitive in every tournament, yet not criticise the other 135 players or so who finished behind Rory as well.
Smith was just sensational - two rounds of 8 under I think just shows how he is such a good player. The up and down on 17th hole followed by the birdie on 18 under that pressure - amazing.
I was also on him at 25/1. ?

Friend of mine is Plod. Works a town about the size of Chesterfield and quite often is the only on duty police in the whole town. The idea that they are all sitting in the back room playing cards and watching Tipping Point is really not the problem, it's the defunding of public services - budget line by budget line - is the point to consider.

If you're of a certain age you will clearly remember just how new and fun the Happy Mondays were as a band. They sounded like nothing that had been before. Paul Ryder, bass player and brother of Shaun (described by Tony Wilson as Britain's best poet since W B Yeats) was a pillar of that sound and 58 is no age, even with the amount of over indulgences they all partook of.

I saw them many times circa 1988/89 and loved all the stuff up until the Madchester EP. After that I thought they became a bit too self aware and started to become predictable and a victim of their own success
I remember one particular gig at Trent Poly, we saw them in the bar and sat with them. Tried to make conversation but it was quickly apparent that they were tripping their nuts off!
The gig was in the big room downstairs (which was a surprise as we'd seen Inspiral Carpets and Stone Roses around the same time and they were playing the smaller upstairs room). The sound was incredible and particularly Paul's amazing bass. He was always the lynchpin of their sound for me
The gig ended up with them fighting on stage ?
    RIP

You not been to Ally Pally for the darts? Try that and I suggest you may change your mind. Banging night out, all in good spirits, with pretty much everyone dressed as some obscure character as the other.

I went to an alumni lecture at my University where they had got an old boy (yes - male, pale, stale) back to talk about his career at the very top of a very large company. Everyone wanted to know what was the one thing they needed to work on to be successful and one person asked him, in the Q&A, what was the one thing that had allowed him to be so successful. His answer? Luck!
It's so true, I have people around me at work - they are not bad people, they are not bad at their job but they maybe had someone above them retire, or got associated with a big account just before it bought a load of stuff, or work for someone who pulled them in turn up through the company.
Personally, I believe that while you need huge amounts of luck, you also need the ability to self-promote and shine (but not too much) and you need some degree of emotional intelligence (ability to not rub people up the wrong way). And a lot of luck, a lot of luck. But intelligence, even to quite a basic level, really isn't (imho) part of the secret sauce.
So (and I did that one ironically), what annoys me and should annoy me is when people who have been successful in life don't realise that if only the wheel had spun differently a couple of times they would not be where they are. Most of the time it is largely out of their hands, even if they may be (sometimes) too arrogant and self deluded to appreciate that.
