MauritianMonsta reacted to CambridgeRam in We need to be patient
I have contemplated starting a thread on the need for patience at various points over the past couple of years. Firstly, when things were dire under Pearson, I felt that we needed to hold our nerve and let him mould the club on and off the field, in a similar way to how he had in his previous jobs. For example, a lot of the sports science now used at Leicester is built upon foundations that he implemented. Under Lampard, I nearly wrote calling for the need to be patient when he took the job as a rookie and again around Christmas time when there was wild chatter of us storming the automatics, aided by some January business.
However, I think the need for patience is required more now than at any point since our relegation in 2008. The problems the club faces can be distilled down into one issue, the club bet the house on us being promoted before now. The spending spree under Clement was executed in order to propel us to the promised land. Anya's lucrative stay in a Derby Travelodge would be irrelevant if we had been promoted before now. The club's inventive amortisation policy is designed to kick the risk of the short term gambles into a time when they predict that our financial landscape would be transformed by Premier League football. The merits of this gamble is a different issue. Some see Mel as one of us and doing exactly what we all dream of doing, yet some see him as a megalomaniac figure. For what its worth, I fall into the former category rather than the latter. This does not mean that he is absolved from any share of the blame however, but I would say that he has and does act with Derby County's best interest at heart.
The gamble has backfired spectacularly and this is why we need to be patient. Cocu is the manager  who was in the chair when the music stopped and a different approach has been adopted as result. I know the term 'transition' is a contested one within football, however it is undeniable that we are now in the middle of a period of transition. Look at the promotion of youth and the players that have left and will be leaving over the next 12 months. The approach to transfer windows has (thankfully) changed. I was pleased to see us loan Paterson and Hamer rather than be held to ransom for permanent signings that weren't our first choice, regardless of their on-field performances. January has been a frustrating month, Cocu's reaction to questions about it shows that, but again the club has adopted a more diligent approach of identifying top targets and holding out for quality over quantity. I think Ryan Conway mentioned back in November that work on the upcoming summer window was already well under way. This approach makes much more sense, when you ignore the bright lights of the play-offs or promotion.
Despite my anger at last night's capitulation, I can see the green shoots of recovery from the gamble in Holmes, Knight, Lowe, Bogle, Bird, Bielik, Rooney, Whittaker, Sibley, Marriott et al, if Cocu is given the time required to build. Football is incredibly short sighted in the pursuit of glory, but we need to be patient as Derby try to organically create something that in time will hopefully get us to where we all want to be.
The difficult times will make the good times even better. Football is cyclical in its nature, as we have to take ecstasy of that night in Leeds, with the sheer frustration of last night.

I personally think only Ince falls into that category properly.
I get very frustrated watching Lawrence because he ers on the side of caution far too often for what he could do. As a player signed to do the exciting stuff too often he has a full back isolated and passes it or stands there.
Was a fan of Russell in theory but at that time we had too many players who didn't have the ability but plenty of attitude and energy. I think we've gone a little the other way this time in that alot of the wingers are lazier. During that period we were great on the break (energy and effort to get up) but didn't have enough players with the guile to finf a pass or truly beat players in a 1 on 1 (for the purpose of that it is when the defender is relatively squared up, not beating him by having the advantage of momentum).

I will be honest and say their departures are easier to take knowing we have Phillip Cocu which is credit to the club.
Wasn’t long ago we were being managed by the likes of Phil Brown and Paul Jewell, here we are now with back to back genuine world class players in their day that have played at the top of the game.
Yes, world class players do not = world class managers, but try telling those players in the dressing room that, many of which will have idolised both Lampard and Cocu as youngsters and be inspired by their presence in the dressing room.
Having these types of ex players brings a real buzz about the place, the last year on this forum has been incredible, a season to remember for many reasons, some of which personal with the forum online for 10 years, others for truly magical nights like Elland Road.
And it feels like we’re heading right into another one. If you can’t get excited by the direction this club is heading in, I honestly don’t know what to say.
It’s been a real emotional roller coaster, and whilst I still have minor criticisms over the social media use, I really do wish both Frank and Jody good luck and truly mean it.
I will take no pleasure in seeing Frank and Jody fail, that is their club, their dreams jobs, not Stoke City with a few quid to spend.
I know we are all a little worn out, frustrated and maybe angered by the process, let’s not allow it to sour what was a great year. Go look at the Sarri from Napoli to Chelsea timeline, this is how they do business.
A question I have been chewing on the last couple of days, do we bring in Cocu without Lampard putting us back on the football map? I’m not so sure.
Phillip Cocu, who would have thought it. Thanks Frank, go prove those doubters wrong. Once a ram, always a ram.

I could be the ultimate optimist and hope Frank can emulate Brian but I’ll settle for Nigel at the moment.  Not since Nigel Clough have we had the same manager starting consecutive seasons at the helm.
2012/13 (and before) - Nigel Clough
    2013/14 - Nigel Clough
    2014/15 - Steve McLaren
    2015/16 - Paul Clement
    2016/17 - Nigel Pearson
    2017/18 - Gary Rowett
    2018/19 - Frank Lampard
    2019/20 - ?????????????

Obviously I don't want Frank to go etc etc.  If we do have to replace him, then I don't care *who* it is, I care *what* it is (if that makes grammatical sense).  It has to be someone that is going to play a similar style of football to Lampard, that can just take the current squad, maybe tweak it slightly, but not make any radical changes to the style of play.  The last thing we want to do is go McClaren->Clement->Wassall->Pearson->McClaren->Rowett->Lampard again, with all the associated turnover of players and 'time to adapt to the new system' etc each time.  Plus it keeps the same path for youth players coming into the first team, so we don't suddenly decide we want to play direct when we have an academy full of ball-players.  Beyond that, I don't care who they are, whether they're all proven manager at this level or an unknown rookie, English or foreign etc.

So let me get this straight... your mate is getting two tickets whilst you're at a wedding, and you want two more tickets for two more mates?
So you have 3 actual friends, and you think it's a good idea to come on here and brag about it, knowing full well we don't have 3 mates between us, then ask for our help!
Next you'll be saying you all want to sit together!    What a Bamford!
