Just reading Julia Boyd's Travellers in the third Reich. Some very unpleasant parallels with where we are now, even to the extent of a political party taking their place in parliament with a bravado and behaviour described as 'pantomime' and ridiculed by commentators at the time.
    No prizes for guessing who

I know two exiters not long for this world and a couple of youngsters now able to vote who are pro eu
Given the age demographic of the referendum it will be interesting to see how that might work out and what the youngsters are landed with that they didn't vote for
Meanwhile, someone explain to me how the exiters' 17 million is a majority when the population is 66 million
Not allowing the biggest group who would be affected to vote, ie the youngsters is a total betrayal of democracy
But they can't vote because they are not 18. However they can drive, have kids and join the army
    Totally flawed system

The issue was that it was offered as a binary, in or out.
As the mess has unraveled it becomes clear that it is not a binary and could never be.
And so we see the ongoing squabble being between a little bit is and a lot isn't versus a lot is and a little bit isn't, all within a political frame which hasn't had to cope with anything like since the corn laws.
The process continues to be bitterly divisive, absorbing political time and turning people away from engagement with politics at a time when we have seen a rise in hate crime, knife crime, homelessness, which are actually reasons why people should be engaged in politics.

The issue is the concept of the nation state.
Take Italy; before the Risorgimento people saw themselves as Florentines or Neopolitans.
After Garibaldi etc al, suddenly they had to see themselves as Italians
What makes a state? Culture? Language? Geography?

If I was the nominated driver I'd always drop my mates there to get chips for the rest of the journey back. One time I stopped the stylish blue Austin metro I was driving, my mates piled out and I then had to move because a fire engine was coming past. None of my mates noticed this and on their way out they piled into an equally stylish but nevertheless different blue Austin metro, much to the surprise and alarm of the elderly lady driver who was sat there.
