  1. I'm making my annual pilgrimage from deepest France for the Portsmouth match . I'm hoping to meet up for a pint with two family members , before the match . They are ST holders at Pompey , sensible and mature . Will they be welcomed in the Brunswick / Alex , or best avoided ?

Also ideas for a good Indian restaurant for early evening would be much appreciated , especially London Rd.  ish

    area .  Thanks

  2. I remember the "pay by wire " system in Derby Co-0p , great fun to watch as a nipper . The Co-Op store in East st.  had a system of vacuum tubes , the money was placed in a small cylindrical container , then whisked away down the brass tubes to a distant room . A minute later your change arrived with a whoosh and a clatter , along with your cheque number receipt , of course .

Does anyone remember the forerunner of the Ice cream van, the guy who used to have a three wheeler bike with a big insulated box on the front, see the link below. There wasn't any of this soft whipped ice cream just solid rectangles of ice cream "bricks" that fitted into rectangular shaped wafers.

There was also a guy who went around the houses sharpening knives he had the grind stone powered by the bikes crank.

The Walls man came round our estate , trouble was he was a distinctly unsavoury character . His hands were permanently black , as if he had to keep replacing his bike chain . His teeth were an amazing mixture of colours , my dad always said that if he had a white one , he'd have a snooker set .  Chellaston in the 50s , anyone remember "Georgie " ?

  4. My annual visit to PP today . I haven't lived in Derby for 30 years so I'm not sure of the roads , but I'd like a pint before the match , is the Brunswick still a  decent place , or is there an alternative , perhaps a bit nearer the ground ( I'm walking ).

You can call me a grammar pedant but I don’t care. This “appealing a decision “ drives me mad so I’m glad to see that John Percy correctly says “appeal against this decision “. “Appealing a decision” is almost as bad as saying “of” instead of “have”.

    Or saying " Haitch " instead of " Aitch " - aarrgghh .
