A free agent who can score goals, tracks back, works his socks off, technically sound, good passer, great engine.  Why isn't he already here?

So it was a disappointing result for me, to lose in the 95th minute.  Altho' did we really warrant the win? Barnsley were very poor but by accounts so were we (going by comments on here as I didn't see the game).  I've said on here a few times I'm an eternal optimist. Overall though, I am a realist.
I took an objective look through the team and sadly even I struggle:
    Yes
Martin, Waghorn, Marriott, Bogle, Lowe, Bielik, Holmes, Huddlestone, Davis and maybe Malone
But need to play it right, Mariott and Waggers playing off Martin and dare I say off an occasional long ball from the back rather than scare us with playing from the back with players perhaps not skillful enough.
Holmes is attacking and scares defences, but Huds is slow and relies on having someone available to pass to.  If they're not available he goes backwards, or is at risk of being robbed as he can't run out of trouble.  Bielik has to play DM not CB.  We need more drive in the midfield. Bogle and Lowe show maturity and skill going forward and defending. Davis is a leader.  Malone gives 100% but there's something there that I'm not convinced about.  His final ball maybe.
Paterson  -  showing signs but jury out still. Same for Shinnie.
Clarke  -  had a great debut but been suspect since so he's currently a no for me. Far too slow too.
Knight, Buchanan, Sibley, Bird, Mitchell-Lawson, Whittaker -  don't doubt their potential but still young and raw.
Roos, Dowell, Lawrence, Bennett, Jozefzoon, Evans  -  too inconsistent or shown little to show me their PL potential. Dowell is most definitely falling far short of his being an apparent Mount replacement. Roos scares me literally every time I see him.
Anya  -  I blow hot and cold on him but is he worth a punt?  He's nothing if not direct.
Having had 3 true PL players last year, in Mount, Wilson & Tomori they plugged a lot of the gaps we have. Rooney will help but I don't expect him to be a "save our season" signing. We need a good Jan transfer window for a solid, decisive keeper, quick CB and a bullish attacking CM.
Sorry for the slightly negative download.  Perhaps someone can pick holes in my lack of faith and make me feel more positive again?!

Could you please explain the process for identifying, scouting, selecting and buying a player?
Do we have a dedicated team, would you say it is on a par with other championship clubs and do you feel we get good value in terms of ability and potential pre-sale value?
...I know that's 2 questions, but they are kinda linked.
    Thanks.
    Actually it's about 20 questions.

Shocked and disappointed by this news.  That's 3 so called professionals, plus probably at least another one player sitting in the front involved.  I'm almost waiting to hear news of another injury.
So where does that leave us.  No Keogh for the rest of the season, plus possibly no Bennett or Lawrence.  Keogh obviously the biggest impact and sadly very possibly the end of his career. Centre back becomes a January priority.
However, as an optimist at heart I am now focusing on looking for positives.  A great opportunity for Clarke to step up to the plate. Davis likely to come back in altho a possible opportunity for youth to step up?  It may mean a slight change to how frequently we play out from the back which will likely please many!

We played poorly today (dare I say again?), but then look at our opening 6 or 7 games.  I'd venture it's one of or toughest starts for years - Leeds, WBA, Brentford, Huddersfield, Cardiff, Swansea and Stoke.  I will really judge over the next 6 games.  If similar performances / results, yes, we may have cause to worry.

Fair result? Not really but do I give a stuff, do I heck.  We kept trying and cometh the man, cometh the hour, take a bow Chris Martin. Made a difference soon as he came on.  Won free kicks, won the ball.  Great cross from Lowe (who played well), Paterson great set up and cool, calm finish from the man.  Very articulate post match interview too.

Chris Martin is slowly earning Cocu’s trust.
This can only lead to something good.

Too early yet, let Cocu have the time he needs.  We had a shiite pre-season.  We lost PL quality loan signings which we simply haven't (dare I say, couldn't) replace.  We've had a number of key injuries (Marriott, Bogle).  We're starting to utilise promising youngsters (Sibley, Buchanan etc) but they need time.  We still retain a few players IMO we ought to move on as not good, or consistent enough (Bennett, Lawrence).  But things are happening. The signs of the team gelling and improving are there. It needs time.  Time possibly even for the likes of Martin to rediscover his Billy Wizz boots.
I don't go with the transition theory.  For me a new manager equals transition comments as they reshape.  We've had too many changes in that department.  I think Cocu will succeed but he needs time and our patience.  Difficult I know as we expect and want so much.  Personally I am excited about Rooney joining.  Not because he'll score a sackful (if he does awesome) but because he'll bring so much invaluable experience at a time we historically slump.
Yes I want, even need wins, but we need to give this guy some time....unless of course we end up in the bottom 3 then I'll be clamouring for his removal and everything I just said counts for nowt 😉
