Actually it's Washington, Collins (starters) and maybe Waggy. I don't see Sharp coming here.
Given that we need another midfielder, a number 10 and a striker, if Waggy isn't too expensive then as a squad player, I can see the logic.
I keep saying this - we're in League 1 chaps. Forget the olden days of over-paying - we're not that club anymore. When we 'attracted' big players it's 'cos we paid top, top dollar and it nearly killed us. We need players to get us out of League, that's all and Waggy on a one year isn't a bad option.

.....Well, I couldn't have put it more succinctly myself. Many on here seem to think there's a hidden stash of young goal scoring gems, available at zero cost who can't wait to join DCFC on L1 wages...we need to tinge our hopes and dreams for the coming season with a large dollop of realism...

If a player is free, there's a reason for it - yep, often that they've got the confidence in their ability that being a free agent means there's no transfer fee so they get increased wages. As opposed to some being a) crap b) don't fit the system anymore. But it's definitely not true that free transfer = damaged goods if that's what you meant. There are many, many examples of great players going on a free (Messi for example).
Of course we're focused on a 'good' recruitment strategy but that depends on your definition of 'good'. For every Gyokeres there are 100 Tommy Lawrence's. There are so, so many players that we might have signed, nearly signed, could have signed, etc that it's waaaay too simplistic to say 'let's take a calculated risk'. In MM's world, he was doing exactly that - spend £100m to get £500m. Look where that calculated risk got us.
As I said on another thread, we are simply not in that world anymore. We're in the business of signing players of known ability and personality to get us out of the league and that's pretty much it. Given where we've been, we can't argue with that boring but safe strategy.

Kinky only made 13 less performances for Derby (80+13 on loan) than he did for Man City (103) where many would put him in the category of deity. Always thankful to him for the 3-3 draw against the Wendies when we were 3-1 down on 90 mins but I agree with the general sentiment, always looked really unfit and as the 'let's get Kinky on' chants started I couldn't help feeling is was all a bit a case of the legend not quite matching the reality.

I did say it was probably an unpopular opinion! I struggled with a lot of our signings around that time - just seemed to be money-motivated and there were lots of rumours about brown envelopes.
He was prob on bench 'cos he was a fat git so couldn't last 90 typically. I just remember him standing around and then when he did have the occasional run everyone would wet themselves. Not doubting his talent but I if you asked the players of the time (as I did) they'd say he was not a great pro.

If anyone suggests Beck they get an instant lifetime ban from the forum though - agreed?
My other unpopular view is that Curtis Davies wasn't that good. He couldn't pass for toffee and was glacially slow. Great guy and all that but I was nervous every time he had the ball.

Appreciate what you're saying but I don't think even us self-flagellating Rams fans can blame ourselves for Mel's Mess©.
You know what, it's not that I necessarily blame MM for taking the risk (well, I kinda do), it's the stupid way he did it that's annoying. Massively over-paying for players, really bad choices of manager, not standing by them and then the way he exited. Anyway, that's been done to death hasn't it.

Thought Stallard would have done better.  Lad used to crap goals till he hit the first team. Turned out to be a decent League 1 striker for 4 or 5 years.  That was it.

I agree that players obviously need to push for as much money as possible but I don't agree that the signings don't see Derby as a decent move. I'm not delusional and saying we're a huge club but we've got the history, decent ground, decent fans (in that we're not too demanding) and the training facilities are top class.
Obviously I'm biased but I don't think there's a L1 club close to having our combination of infrastructure, fan base and history (Bolton have the history but little else, maybe Portsmouth too). I doubt these lads would have signed for Cheltenham Town even if they paid 20%+ more in wages. Would you want your legacy to have DCFC on it or Fleetwood Town...?
So I do think, given where these lads have come from, they would see playing for us as an honour. Have you see Luton's ground...?! 😉
