We seem to chase players with very little chance of success, happens time and time again unfortunately.
A player who scores 17 goals on the way to being promoted to a division higher than us currently, if we couldn't compete for Alfie May then how on earth are we competing for Smith?
Only difference here is we didn't want Alfie May....

You would imagine he wouldnt be in the squad tonight if theres legs in this
If he's one of the ones Warne has said is very close. Then you'd imagine he wouldn't be.
But on the other hand if he's still there player and they want to play him they can.
Might be on the bench ..

Norwood is a bit pap though. There's a reason he went from Ipswich to Barnsley, and was then let go.
Well yes he's not by cup of tea.
But 11 goals last season. A play off final.
Now he's playing National League.
Some signing by Oldham for that level though.

If Oldham can sign James Norwood from Barnsley then whoever we get linked with from now on I'll believe it can happen

Seems he's playing tonight. Clearly this is going nowhere soon if that's the case. Bet he get's 2 goals as well and any chance of a move evaporates, Recruitment on a striker has to be quick, as you always get other interest, or, they do something that stops the move like getting a hat trick. We seem to be recruiting forwards at the pace of a snail on ketamine.
Where have you seen that he's playing tonight mate?

I think The Mirror have seen we want Michael Smith and assumed Blackpool are now favourites for Waghorn cos we want someone else.
When Warne see's Waghorn as a ten and we'll want them both

Honestly I'd be amazed if he goes to Blackpool.
If he wanted to go to Blackpool he'd be training with them now not us.
He lives in Derby, his son plays for the academy, goes to school in Derby.
Not sure why he'd want to commute to Blackpool every day to potentially earn a bit more money.
I think the mirror have said Blackpool are favourites cos we want Michael Smith

To me this is a no brainer.
Won't take up much of the budget. Can play across the front line, threat from a set piece. Works his socks off. Loves the club. Confident he would chip in with around 10 goals.
Most clubs in this league would have Waghorn in a heartbeat.
Get him in on a one year deal.

Leigh Curtis just said on his Facebook live he wouldn’t rule this one out
He mentioned in an article yesterday that Warne said he was close to one maybe two.
Wonder if Rhodes is one.

If the fee is right for anyone they're off. Everyone is for sale at the right price.
Exactly mate.
Like Warne said. Tottenham don't want to sell Harry Kane.
But he's got a year left. Everyone has their price.

Assuming Bird isn't available if talks with Hull progress:
I expect the team to be: Wildsmith; Nelson, Bradley, Cashin; Forsyth, Robinson, Smith, Ward; NML, Hourihane; Collins.
If it was me, I think I'd pump the breaks on wing backs when our only real LWB is injured (or not fit enough to start) and we're in the process of shifting the player we had groomed for the 10 role.
I think I'd go for a 4-3-3 with Ward and NML on the wings: Wildsmith; Forsyth, Bradley, Cashin, Wilson; Smith, Hourihane, Robinson/Rooney; NML, Collins, Ward.
Tough situation, but if we can just survive the game and grind out three points then that would be a minor miracle given the circumstances.
A minor miracle to survive a game against Wigan with that side? Behave.

If we have a limit of 300K per signing, then it's going to be very difficult to replace Bird. Do we take the chance of keeping him, going up and then more chance of him signing a new contract or take the money before possibly losing him on a free.
We may or may not have a 300k limit. Think someone alluded to it could be Warne playing games so other clubs don't try and fleece us.
But if we do. That's now. If we sold Bird and added another £2-£3 million in to the mix then we would probably have a bit more than 300k to spend.

Think bird has had long enough to kick on so wouldn’t be against this with a year left for a decent fee usually.
however any money got from sales doesn’t seem to be helping strengthen the squad currently. Think we need a midfielder without bird leaving, would be two if he goes.
with timing of this I do think would be a pretty big setback.
Agree with you here mate. I'm hoping that if we did get a good fee then maybe this would allow Warne a little bit of money to spend.

If true, it’s starting to look like the club is being asset stripped.
Ahhh yes. A man who bleeds black and white, who was part of the march to save the club. Spends about £50 million of his own money to sell a couple of young lads for about £4 million quid.

Or he doesn't sign a new deal and stays
If it's £2-£3 million now or nothing in a year and he doesn't want to stay. Then he goes.
Absolutely no point in keeping a player who does not want to be here.
-
Would have to bring someone in before he left in my opinion.
We are already short in midfield so selling him with no replacement would be daft.
Not sure if we got a relatively decent fee for him (£2 million) that this would allow Warne to spend maybe half of it.
If we replaced him with a midfielder who chips in with more goals then I'm ok with it.
He's only got a year left. So he either stays and signs a new deal or moves on.

Think he comes across as a great bloke, and absolutely gave his all for us at times, especially that Wednesday game.
However, if this is where we’re at in terms of signing attacking players it’s a pretty scathing insight to our recruitment at the minute.I’d be absolutely fine with him as a 4th choice option, but with Washington yet to feature in a friendly, he’d be our 2nd choice going into the start of the season.
To say we needed another good striking option even before we lost Mcgoldrick, it’s really not looking all that promising going into this season. Obviously there’s still a few weeks left to bring players in, but it’s unlikely to be anyone of any real top quality is it?
I don't think it's a scathing insight into our recruitment. More on what's available.
Our recruitment so far has been very good.
It sounds to me like he's a last resort if we can't get anything over the line.
I think Huddersfield/Rhodes is similar to the Collins/Cardiff situation. The player needs paying up if they the club wants them out. If they don't offer the player something acceptable then that player can't go anywhere.
If we don't manage to sign someone permanently. Then I would hope we'd bring Waghorn in and a young striker on loan. Potentially a Stansfield/Coburn type.

Someone on twitter said that Rhodes has signed and played for Derby in the friendly against Huddersfield

Oh yeah, here he is. The pics on the site are odd, I know it’s showing off their new kit but the absence of Derby players in the shots seems very deliberate

Yeah it's definitely deliberate. No way you can take that many photos without having an opposition player in shot.
They must have had to Photoshop us out 🤣🤣
-
Saw a rumour earlier that he played for us yesterday in that friendly.
Then Huddersfield have put some images up from the game.
Rhodes played for them.
Really strange when people just make stuff up.

I think
a) it might have something to do with Rhodes wanting a pay off and as a result them wanting a few to offset it,
b) Not wanting to pay loan fees or full wages for players not guaranteed to be starters,
Both will probably still happen but on our terms.
Alternately
c) you can't get a decent striker for 200k could translate to you can get a decent centre back for that. So if you can move Cashin on for example then maybe you could afford a Shaun Barker sized fee for a better striker.
Maybe Cash plus cash for Ladapo or someone similar could emerge in the coming weeks.
Well if we did that we'd have 3 centre backs all season and we play a back 3.
So we'd have to use the money to sign a centre back
