I've been reading this forum for many years but have never felt comfortable enough to comment mainly because I very rarely get to games (I was a student in Liverpool and then worked away) but I always followed this forum and I have massive respect for David and co who look after it.

However the utter hypocrisy of some posters "no longer supporting Derby" "Mel has a lot to answer for" is utterly ridiculous. Until proven guilty the players in question can do what they like as can the club. I have no sympathy for drink drivers, it is not big. And it's not clever. But these guys are essentially kids and to lambast them for making a mistake is beyond crazy. We've all made stupid decisions in our youth whether it's pissing down an ally way or squaring up to some dick in a club. Most of which we are not proud of. Mel and Phil are simply doing best by the football club and unfortunately Tom is currently the best we can get, and you know what, underneath is failings as a human being, he's a good footballer.
I've had a bit of a rant here, but all I ask is that you look at these players as human beings and not as some pillar of the community. We're all failed, no one is perfect. And I can assure you that the guilt they are feeling inside is way worse then the boo boys insults.
Just because they are footballers it doesn't stop them from being flawed human beings.

(*Disclaimer. I got busted for drink driving. I had lost my dad a few weeks earlier and quite frankly I didn't care for anything. I was 18)

I've mellowed a lot from Wednesday night.
My blood is black and white, I forgive and forget and want to be with my 26000+ thousand mates tomorrow.
See you all at approx 2.30pm.

If he had that much passion for the club, he'd have left at 8pm.
I really don't know how you 'feel for him' when he's let himself, his family, employer and supporters down in a big way. Even if he was unconscious before getting in the car, he shouldn't have been drinking like that just 3/4 days before a game.
What pi55es me off the most is that we turn up to games expecting a fully committed performance from players after paying a big sum of money to watch, and probably unknown to us, they are getting pi55ed days before a game and god knows what else they are shoving in their body.
Let's face it, if they hadn't have crashed, we'd have just thought Lawrence was having another off day.

But how do you know he was drunk? He could have been there until 3am but not touched a drop.
I also haven't heard of any stories of him in one of the cars that crashed. They might know their own bodies but you'd expect a captain to have more about him.
If one of your relatives was passing on the A6 at the time the car crossed over and crashed into the lamp post and either killed or seriously injured them, would you be happy?
I don't know how people can forgive a drink driver or anybody that doesn't try to stop it.

Personally think that if he had anything about him he would agree for his contract to be mutually cancelled. I still think as a club we would help towards his rehab we just don't & shouldn't have to pay him for 2 years of a contract he cant fulfill due to his own faults & decisions.

I'd imagine that the club will want to support him, but put bluntly I doubt we will be paying him another penny towards his wages. I'd imagine that it will be quite the legal battle, with the outcome being that his contract is mutually terminated with us supporting his rehabilitation.
I have no doubt he would've been our POTY this season too, which would've made him the first person in our history to win it three times. Instead, this... he must be in a really, really dark place at the moment.

Agree. As a club I’d help him get rehabilitated and then release him. While he’s getting rehabilitated I wouldn’t pay him. Or he can leave now. They would be my choices. He’s one of the biggest earners and has 2 years left in his contract

Killed his own legacy. Would have gone down as one of my favourite players ever, can't stand him anymore. If he was honourable he would let Derby cancel his contract, but I'm sure he'll still be getting paid to sit in the medical bay for something that's his own fault.

I am sure you are right. I doubt however many posters have made such a monumental duck up as this.
We are guessing and we still don't know fully what happened, but I would think as a footballer there would be certain clauses in his contract about how he is seen to represent the club, and also to take every reasonable care to ensure his fitness levels and ability to play football.
Accidents can happen of course but this, on the face of it, does seem a very avoidable accident and caused by reckless behaviour.
If you were a chauffeur, bus driver etc I dare bet there is a clause in the contract that if you lose your licence so you can't do your job then you can be sacked, it has to be a similar case here.

After today's 1-0 win over Blackburn the U23s sit 2nd in the Premier League 2 table.

The next round of league games isn't until 18th October when we entertain Everton.
Meanwhile it's a big week for the U18/19 team who begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Minsk! Kickoff is 2pm on Wednesday afternoon.

He was fantastic today. It wasn’t just how well he played after such a long lay off, it was his leadership. Constantly instructing others and I loved the way he ran over and encouraged Knight when he came on late in the game.
    He’s class.

I think the club have handled it the best they can up to this point.
They had to make a statement as quickly as they could. They had to defend their employees in the first instance until a full investigation has taken place (both police and internal).
Depending on the outcome, they may have no choice but to terminate their contracts. Depending on the outcome, they may never want to wear a Derby shirt again because their reception will always be the same even if they score a winner against forest.
I don't ever remember something quite as bad from any other club across the globe where it involves so many players. This is probably as bad as it gets.

I am firmly of the belief that almost anyone can be rehabilitated and become a better person after making a mistake. That's my view on the drink driving.
That doesn't take away from the fact that professional athletes should not be vomiting on the week of a game or that a senior figure should be thick enough to send the video to anyone outside of the club. It suggests to me that they don't have the mentality required to get us promoted. And, ultimately, that's what I care about. I'm not suggesting that they're terrible people, but that Keogh and Huddlestone aren't suited to the captaincy and that Bennett and Lawrence are perhaps showing why they haven't lived up to their obvious potential.
