  1. I pity anyone, no matter how high or how humble that has to contend with cancer. It is a life altering condition that not only profoundly affects the sufferer but also their family. Any condition whose treatment requires those administering it to wear heavy duty PPE is not to be taken lightly. I wish him and anyone else suffering from or caring for someone with this terrible disease the best possible outcome.
  2. Hi David, sorry I'm late to the party with this one. When we took our three Grandkids on in early 2022 our social worker was very much pushing us in the direction of fostering them. Due to our personal circumstances at the time (my cancer treatment including major surgery) this was impossible. If my memory serves me correct we had to write a letter to the local authority declining fostering. The social worker told us there was another way whereby the kids could remain with us. We had to attend court and an interim Child Arrangement Order was granted, allowing us time to apply for a Special Gardianship Order, which we were granted by the court in February 2023. My wife gave up her full-time employment in May as, in our mid-fifties, looking after the kids and the household (and occasionally me) while working full-time was too much for her. We receive a weekly means-tested special gardianship allowance from the local authority, together with a monthly Universal Credit payment (in addition to my salary). I doff my cap to anyone fostering or otherwise caring for others' children, it's not always beer and skittles, but it is highly rewarding.
  3. I don't post on here too often nowadays, but I'm always reading and keeping up to date. I was totally stunned and saddened to see this topic. I've always read B4's posts and admired his loyalty, positivity and dedication to his beloved Rams. I will truly miss him on here. He has set an example to us all to live our lives to the fullest extent possible whatever challenges we face. Rip Daniel.
  4. We went through the same process with 3 of our Grandchildren last year. We got granted the SGO in February this year. We found it a little daunting at first, with Social Services involvement, delving into our past etc. The SGO process (dealing with solicitors, attending court, medicals & interviews) was a little stressful but everyone involved was really helpful and supportive. We got through it. One thing I do recall was Social Services trying to push us into being Foster carers for the children on a permanent basis, the whole process for this seemed way too onerous at the time (I was undergoing cancer treatment). We asked about other options and were then told about the SGO, which seemed a way better permanent solution to us anyway. It seems a little odd after the SGO is granted and Social services step back and leave you to it. It's really rewarding to know that you can shape some young lives and give them a really stable loving home. All the very best to you, David and your family unit.
