The basics are key and it’s been mentioned in previous matches threads by @FlyBritishMidland myself and a few others, including Paul Warne mentioning how important they were, in our victory away at Charlton.
I have only seen the highlights of this match and I didn’t see the build up to the throw in, but @HorsforthRam mentioned NML, and it can happen, and it does happen with other players, that we have all seen in a few other matches, when they either over play it, hold on to the ball far too long, or add in additional step overs, struggle to shield the ball, put in a poor pass, to put a team mate under pressure etc,  forcing other players to then also to fail, to do the basics, which is usually down to making the quick decision, of controlling it and passing it on, in a comfortable manner and therefore keeping us in position, instead of the knock on effects it has on the team and usually the result, when we fail to be good at the basics.
From only watching the highlights it looked like we created a few good opportunities to score that second goal, but on this occasion, were not far away from doing so.

Yes, I was thinking the same. As the gloom merchants say there is a bit too much hoofing and outbreaks of head tennis but quality of football ? Surely a big chunk of quality football isn’t about tactics and set up .. it has to be about how players control a ball, pass the ball, beat a man, tackle cleanly, read the game as individuals.
We are slipping up because the consistency of quality in individual play isn’t there . That isn’t about effort or coaching it’s about skill level.

There’s three examples of when we’ve scored late to win a game.
If Barnsley are doing what they need to but are still below us, does that mean we’re also doing what we need to do? Regarding them rarely losing, they’ve only lost one less game than us.
I’m not ruling anyone out of making the top two but I’m not ruling anyone in either. That was my point.

I'm sorry, I can't help myself, but just to balance out this thread, we have one more point on the board, we are still second, there are 45 points still to play for, we can still get promoted, and yes I am a happy clapper! 

Judging by the reaction to this result, I think I’ll be all alone in the away end on Tuesday.
It’s disappointing to drop two points, but as we have seen that’s the norm for sides in our position. Why some people think we should be above it is beyond me.
Some people just fail to take any kind of perspective from the game. Look at the outpouring of anger after a draw. Can you imagine the reaction if we were getting hammered at home by Orient like Pompey were a few short weeks ago? Or getting whipped by Wycombe and conceding five like Peterborough today? I dread to think what it would be like if that was us.
Every game is a potential trip hazard at this stage and teams will do their very best to disrupt us which it sounds like Shrewsbury did very well, similar to Cheltenham before them.
Every team in the run in will look to do the same. Exeter on Tuesday will look to do a job on us too and it will be another tricky game to negotiate. We will do well to win.
Every team in the mix will have games where they contrive to take a poor result from a winnable game. This time it was us. We have 15 games to play and there will be highs and lows, twists and turns, good performances and bad, good results and bad, but we have to stick by the team.

Drop points we have the usual Warne pile on from the same individuals talking about his tactics. Credit to Shrewsbury in their cup final, they made every ball a scrap and I’m impressed they managed that intensity for the whole game. We tried to play and were consistently stopped from doing so, then forced it at times and turned the ball over too regularly and easily. The switch to the back 4 second half helped we gained more control and in a game of few chances we created enough to win but didn’t get that second goal, a few if onlys Wilson hitting the bar, Collo in first half from the ward set piece was an inch wide at the most, a couple of dubious offsides and penalty shouts. Their goal came from nothing, i need to see it back but  Wilson and Mendez lose the ball trying to be too intricate (Nyambe would’ve possibly made a difference in that situation), but then their player has mishit the pull back causing Sibley to slide past the ball and it’s landed perfectly for him to finish it. Real shame thought Wilson had won it and there definitely should’ve been more than 6 minutes added time.
One of those games, we didn’t lose and are still second it’s just annoying that we couldn’t capitalise on our rivals slipping up. This is going to be one close promotion race. Right to the wire.
On the fans today, with the exception of the fans in the North Stand who flooded the exits when Shrewsbury equalised, I thought they were immense. South stand trying to get Paul Warne’s barmy army going all first half, the stadium came alive second half and were with the team (the majority) right to the end. Show frustration at final whistle by all means but the lads need that support every game now.

Very frustrating, particularly given Bolton & Peterborough dropped points.
As others have mentioned, conceding late goals at home is becoming a recurring theme with this team. There seems to be a real reluctance to a) hold onto possession & b) slow the game down. We drop deeper when protecting leads at home & on the break, seem desperate to make the killer pass to score a deciding goal. Problem however is that the ball is often lost from the flick on/speculative ball/run into a load of their defenders...they then recycle the ball & come back at us with our defensive shape pulled out of position.
We can point to weak defending for the goal but we shouldn't be conceding the ball so easily in the first place. Get the ball on halfway line? Hold the bloody thing up & play it simple to move the team up the park. This is basic stuff we're not doing & it's going to cost us.

Yeah it can be but all worth it. Still the largest flag in the country that travels away from home the most.
