Interesting and important context when reviewing the season.

To be honest I have, quietly, expected we’d fall away from the pack since Jan 31st and I’ve been trying to enjoy the season for what it is since then. That’s easy to say now but I had a sense of deja vu from the season before to be honest, we didn’t come out of that window any stronger and we’re arguably weaker. Not quite loosing Shinnie and Jagielka weaker, but we couldn’t address any direct problems we had in that squad because of our business plan. I’m not complaining about that, but it is what it is

We did well to maintain that run as long as we did, but it essentially papered over the cracks. Warne knew his issues from his first day, too many young players and too many old players with no players on their prime aside Wildsmith. That’s what was needed in January and we couldn’t land anyone, or at least a loan or two of 22-23 year olds who are coming to the end of their current contracts and have something to prove

  2. I’m not too big on statistics overall, but I have been looking at transfermarkt tonight which isn’t up to date after today but I think it helps show the picture. A lack of goals from defenders, our home grown talents haven’t positively contributed enough in a league you would hope they could dominate, not enough goals or assists from the wide players including NML. It’s stuff we already know I guess but I think it shows the issue as stark as possible

Cracking game, Liverpool 2 Arsenal 2, Arsenals game to lose an almost did, 2-0, Xhaka gets involved with Alexander-Arnold it winds the Liverpool supporters up then Liverpool go and score, HT Linesman elbows(on purpose)Robertson on the chin for something(I guess)he said, Salah misses a penalty, Almost 90mins Fermino levels it, Ramsdale makes a world class save from Salah in added time, Then somehow Konate misses from a yard out only for Ramsdale to push it wide.

It's been a while since I've enjoyed an EPL game, Blood and guts, And Refereed by a quality Official...Paul Tierney 👏

It was a great match and a fantastic statement for what Premier League football can be. It’s worth saying though, there’s no team as consistent as Arsenal who can deliver a top quality match for viewers over the time since the Premier League. They can be unplayable, they can be absolutely terrible, but very rarely have they not provided entertainment. Them against most top sides should be a guaranteed 4pm Sunday KO for Sky.

  4. I know we can all have different opinions on the incident but am I the only one who thinks tweeting this during a live game is a little out of order? Yeah I get he’s got a right to an opinion and expressing it, but it’s an incident that needs proper scrutiny and cooler heads to maybe dissect it rather than adding fuel to the fire.

Rant over, full disclosure that Ive always thought Carragher is a bit of a prat

Just looking at the highlights, this is grabbed from when their 2nd goal went in (couldn't find a wider view), so that was about 15 mins plus time added on and at that point it was obviously still only 1-0 so even just from this limited view, there's a lot of empty seats for an area that in theory is sold out. I know some of the young guys sometimes move around from allocated seats but if it is in any way representative of the whole stand then that's some big gaps for a game that was still in the balance. Did you get the impression that these people were there at the start but left during the 2nd half ? As you say, it wasn't like this was the last throws of the game with the result already decided.

It’s just a part of the stadium that never sells very well when it’s not over 30,000. I presume it’s not the best of views from there

Maybe, so why not start someone else rather than NML who has looked well off his best for 4 or 5 games?

I’d fully agree with you on that tbh, my one big criticism with Warne would be that I don’t think his player management since Jan 31st has been overly good. BUT I’d counter that by saying I was sat in the stand on Saturday saying ‘well I’d bring Barkhuizen on, let him have a run out’, then when he comes on he does a shocking header and Ipswich run up the other end and it’s 2-0. My point on that is that we could all set up the team differently or think a player might make a difference, when it’s still quite likely we’d still be in the same position no matter whI was playing at the minute.

They were putting effort in - NML looks cream-crackered and has for weeks - it's not effective though is it.

Thought Radio Derby made a good point after the game that maybe our rushed pre season is starting to show. Yes age and squad size will also a factor in that, but it’s another factor that some teams are starting to find that extra 10-20% which we can’t.

Yes.  Drives me mad.  Make life a misery for him.  Scream in his face enough to warrant a yellow.  You'll be amazed how you get freekicks and 50/50 penalties afterwards.

Ha well I’d maybe wouldn’t get quite as far as to make their life a misery but I get your point!

What I’d maybe say is that a player, and most certainly the captain, need to be able to have an open dialogue with the ref. This is because a ref needs to be sure of his decisions and explain why he’s made said decision. Was he sure of that disallowed goal today? What did he see? He needs to be able to communicate it, if he can’t then he can’t disallow it, so you need to question him and put that thought over to them. It might even, just maybe, make them into better officials because you are asking them to take responsibility for their decisions, when you just have a bit of whinge and carry on then it’s not helping anyone.

  9. After seeing the fan cam of the disallowed goal, and the controversy surrounding it, my one thought is that we were seemingly quite nice about it in the aftermath. I don’t think we should be surrounding the ref, but we just accepted it and moved on. Should Bird be going and getting clarification from the ref in real time and communicating to the other players they believed McGoldrick fouled the keeper to which Bird or whoever can point out how far McGoldrick was away from the incident?

The officials won’t change their mind and yes the refs are rubbish etc, but they are also human and you can introduce doubt into their head once the game has restarted.

The ref made some very strange decisions.  One was effectively giving a drop ball for an alleged foul, and giving the goal keeper the ball after one of their players went down “injured”.  It was simply a Derby throw and should have left it to Derby to make the sportsmanship call.  Or am I wrong?

I think he was stopping the game anyway before the keeper kicked it out, which I guess if shoe was on the other foot then you’d the ref to stop the game. I do think those players should be made to go off for a certain amount of time because in that instance only Derby suffered because we were growing momentum which Ipswich were able to stifle with a long stoppage. Enforce the player to go off for a minute  and see how many go down or roll back onto the pitch to receive treatment.

  11. One, of many things, I’ve learnt about League 1 is that it’s important to get in the officials head as well as the opposition. Case in point is their keeper making a big deal about being fouled on the corner before the disallowed goal. Ipswich were good at it, niggly fouls, making a meal out of any contact, complaining about everything when they are fouling just as much. Don’t blame that for it by the way, it’s gamesmanship, but we are frankly terrible at it.

  12. Collins is on 8 or 9 goals so far? To be honest I think if others were scoring around him I don’t think we’d really notice a lack of goals, especially considering that he’s in and out of the side. Not that I particularly want to point fingers but like on Saturday we create chancers that aren’t being put away by our attacking players in general, it’s not down to one player.

  13. Every few months we seem to make it onto here, one of my favourite twitter pages.

Anyway as someone who has to console themselves with a chicken tikka pukka pie sometimes at PP as I’ve not had chance to eat in town, where in the bloody heck is someone getting these from? Last time we were on was for a Christmas dinner in a tub from inside the stadium!

This is a good listen, especially some of the ideas on what we can do and also putting our British "crisis" into context. Rory Stewart is excellent at summing up complicated issues in a few sentances. I didn't really understand the Good Friday Agreement and the Northern Ireland Protocal issues until he explained them a couple of weeks ago...

I listened to this on Saturday and thought it raised a good point that maybe isn’t really considered in this. Is that yes, some people are trying to get to the UK because of family but also it’s quicker to get work possibly in the black market (I’m gonna presume they meant by this general cash in hand work as well the more dangerous and dodgy trades). Rory Stewart, who’s view on global politics is largely very good but also a bit too gloomy, proposes that you all countries have to take in refugees that is the equivalent of  1% of your population every year and introduce ID cards so then it’s harder for those that come to enter the black market. I don’t think it’s a perfect policy, but the idea is that you have to deal with the crisis and regulate it rather than trying to wash your hands of it. People don’t want to cross in small boats but what we have in place now makes people feel like they have no other choice.

The outrage from some quarters resulting from Lineker's tweet, has however, neatly deflected attention from the policy it took aim at. The Tories will no doubt view this as a 'win', despite his reinstatement.

    Plus ça change...

Unfortunately true, and if I was being cynical the BBC upper management played their part in doing that Friday night too. Politically it’ll be interesting, the Tories started that week with a lot of good stock over the NI agreement but they’ve quickly lost that with Braverman’s policy and could cause further damage in the next few days. So they might have a small win, but they still have to deal with the fall out of the policy

According to the BBC viewing figures for MOTD were up by half a million. That might give them food for thought .

The more interesting figures will be if the ratings are up or down on iplayer after the weekend. I really doubt 500,000 extra people tuned in because of no pundits, but probably because they were intrigued to see what they would do.

  17. I think what makes the argument a bit daft on here, is that if this was a discussion about Alan Sugar and his tweet with the picture of Corbyn next to Hitler then nearly everyone’s opinion would be reversed which completely sullies any free speech or impartiality argument.

Some don’t like Lineker and that’s it. I’m not sure you can have a debate on the rights or wrongs on what he said because of it. This is feeling much like the Covid/Politics debates on here where it’s saying things for the sake of it and losing focus on any understanding what the BBC impartiality rules are meant to mean, the BBC managements handling of the case, Linekers phrasing (that I thought was very carefully put) and where our politics is at the minute.

The other thing to acknowledge is that I think we are in a bit of what I call ‘silly season’ where something reaches the zeitgeist and we all argue over something we don’t really need it Wasn’t it Jimmy Carr’s joke last year? Give it a week and we will have sunnier weather, be outside more and Match of the Day saga will be at the back of peoples mind.
