Spanish got a reaction from KCG in Birmingham FFP hearing starts today
It needs embargoes and points deducted.  It also needs consistency none of this subjective depends on the seriousness carp.  There is no comparison test of fairness and leaves everybody believing that teams have been treated too softly or harshly.  Breach the rules and automatic 12 points deduction and 12 months embargo.  Second offence within 3 years 15 points and 24 months embargo.  I think the whole thing needs scrapping due to the unfair support that relegated teams get by way of parachute payments.  In order to compete it encourages other clubs to risk punishment because the relegated sides have too much pulling power

That’s just the one of the worst questions you should aim at any boss because it’s laden with criticism. But I guess that’s the point.  In football I don’t see anything average as being anything other than failure.  We are a fat ugly bridesmaid.
our academy is about to arrive but a season too late and there is a risk that we will feed our prospects to more successful clubs.  Mel’s sole contribution is in jeopardy.  As you may notice i’m not particularly positive about our future and I am at a loss to see how we get out of it

Spanish reacted to RamNut in Bloody Southerners - Clough and Taylor at Brighton
Just finished reading 'With Clough by Taylor' which seemed likely to offer an interesting perspective.
This was the book that allegedly started the rift. I remember reading somewhere that BC was angry that taylor hadn't told him he was writing a book, and that Taylor was supposedly cashing in on Clough's name. I read it when it first came out in 1980 but it has just been re-issued. But its not 'Clough by Taylor'. Its 'With Clough by Taylor'. In other words its their joint story in Peter Taylor's own words.
its an interesting book covering the entire history of their friendship and partnership from Cloughies trial match at Middlesbrough, to the European cup win just prior to the start of the decline. Its their joint history. Its covers all the key moments including the early days at hartlepool when taylor took a huge pay cut to join brian as his assistant; the move to Derby; the resignations and the possible return in 1977; etc etc.
There are bits in the book which might have riled Brian but ultimately it is an honest and affectionate portrait of Cloughie from a time before the legendary and terminal split.
The massive influence of harry storer - Derby's former manager - on them both is interesting to re-discover.
Apparently Clough could have been signed by Derby as a player. Taylor tipped off Harry Storer about this amazing new unknown striker, but Storer was inhibited by a lack of available funds.
There are some great snippets. For example, when taylor was managing Burton, apparently out of the blue Cloughie phoned. "I hadn't heard from Brian in four years until he telephoned my home and came straight to the point....."i've been offered the managership of hartlepools and i don't fancy it. But if you come i'll consider it". Then he banged the phone down". What ? Brian is such a strange and unique character.
Another gem: Peter states that "the Baseball Ground has always appealed to me.Nottingham is my birthplace but i feel more at home in Derby, a real football town". And this was written at the height of their success with Forest!
And finally - one comment i was particularly pleased to read concerned Les Green. I has always narked me that Les Green was virtually written out of Derbys glorious history. Graham Richards absolutely ( and unjustly) slagged him off in the 1984 audio BBC Radio Derby Centenary story. It was a horrible assassination job on a great player by non-expert too fond of the sound of his own voice.
Taylor states " i took him (les) to hartlepools in 1965 and then signed him for Derby from Rochdale for £7000. He never missed a game for two years and during that time - and i speak as an ex-keeper - he was the best goalkeeper in the world". Kinell. Praise indeed and a slightly better epitaph for the players family to savour. RIP Les Green.
    nice one Pete.

gosh, brings back memories.  Saw Eddy and the hot rods, boomtown rats, the Adverts around that time also.  I've got the Dickies white 10" single (sound of silence?) somewhere.  Derby got a fair number of events in those days.  Curved Air with  stu copeland (police) on drums lots of other great artists

We wouldn't go into this, if our friends had not purchased there.  i must have driven them ten times back and forth from the airport while they were searching, working out all angles and then fixing up their new house.  Their lawyer has recently accepted us as clients, so that is worked out.  Don't know how reputable, but she did a good job for our friends and speaks English.

you must have a reputable, English speaking lawyer of course.  The first requirement is the most difficult! If at all possible try to get recommendations but your are right it can be a jungle out there.  Unfortunately, the phrase 'reputable lawyer in Spain' is an oxymoron

Yeah I think we do - reading back and my comment about it not being an issue for the fans was meant purely in terms of it not being us who lent the money in the first place. Agree that it may become an issue for the fans if the club goes bust or ends up being run into the ground because MM gets sick of keeping it afloat

With respect that isn't true. Not from my perspective anyway.
At the time the message from ramblur and others was that the club was debt free, and compliance with ffp wasn't a problem.
Without wishing to revisit the arguments etc, i posted the overall company accounts, which showed significant annual losses and £95m of debt to MM. I stated that i wasn't an accountant but that the overall picture seemed problematic to put it mildly. Ramblur went off on one because statements about the accounts were his personal domain and he openly contemptuous and rude to others who strayed into that territory. (I avoided responding in kind, but by then he was taking verbal pot shots at numerous people including mods). Putting the tantrums aside, i still believe that the fundamental business model of a championship football club does not work. Billionaire owners are losing millions and clubs are struggling to comply with Ffp.
It was interesting to see a shift this season and to hear stories of austerity measures at the club and the academy. Good news as far as i was concerned. We also had one particular poster giving us what appeared to be good inside info, praising the executive and announcing that we had agreed our ffp  position - we seemed to be absolutely at the limit.
without looking up the specific figures, the approximate summary of our position seemed to be somthing like (from  memmory)
turnover @£25m wages @£37m  overall annual loss @£25m The points i was making were headline issues rather than accountancy detail.
all transfer fees have to be funded by sales we need to massively reduce the wage bill mel is funding excessive unsustainable losses  Fundamentally the problem is that television money in the prem has caused salaries to mushroom. That affected the salaries payable in the championship too. But the television money was not distributed to championship clubs in equal measure to offset those salary increases. Unless this situation changes, the financial model won't work. The only way to avoid having huge losses is to significantly cut the wage bill.
Furthermore championship clubs cannot afford to pay transfer fees therefore the strategy is inevitably based on the development of academy players, freebies and loans. We have a great thread full of suggestions for signings, but there is no way we can afford the fees for most of those players. Not a very nice position to be in.
this season we have made moves to promote and develop academy players. We have made some good signings on low fees - especially holmes, (and i remain hopeful with regards to evans). The financial position will be much improved when the out of contract high earners are released. However....i don't personally understand splashing £5m on any player. We are caught in a predicament - chasing promotion on the one hand, and trying to fix the broken financial model on the other.
Given all of the above, the rumours of mel looking for help, and seeming to conclude that he cannot continue to fund the losse, does not surprise me. The financial realities won't go away unless we fluke a promotion and then the financial landscape is totally different. (Chelsea's turnover for example is £325. £300m per season more than ours. And a huge chunk of that increased income is tv money).
    So where do we go?
we could compare ourselves to sheff utd and swansea.
Swansea won't get many accolades this season, but they have promoted four academy players to the first team - roberts, rodon, mcburnie and james. The difference is that their young players are 21-22. Ours are 19. We might be two years behind. once we concluded that the previous generation of guy, vernam, hanson, kwarme thomas, farrend rawson etc were not going to be good enough, it set us back a bit.
Sheff utd have operated a very frugal acquisitions policy. (Compare mcgoldrick on a freebie to waggers at £5m). Signings like holmes and evans are what we can afford. They won't all work, but fans need to understand the financial realities and show some tolerance. The raging away fans at aston villa might do well to think about our financial position as compared to aston villa who have had premier league income and parachute monies. I think villa might get promoted this year, but if they don't then ultimately they will have to face the same financial conundrum as everyone else, and slash and burn.
