He's had a chance at PL level, in a relegation struggle being fed by a Wigan team. Lets see if he's any good at this level before we judge him.

Could be a Lupoli..... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Except Lupoli had class. Even the name " Arturo Lupoli " sounds like hes bound to be good.. Conor Sammon doesnt quite have the same effect.

Derby County could look to net Conor Sammon on season loan

DERBY County are eyeing a striker they missed out on 18 months ago.

The Rams are interested in taking Wigan Athletic's Conor Sammon on a season-long loan.

Derby lost out in the battle for Sammon in January 2011 when he moved from Kilmarnock to Wigan for £600,000.

He is one of a number of strikers on Derby's list of targets as they look to strengthen the attack knowing that Steve Davies is likely to leave after he turned down the offer of a new contract.

Ipswich Town, where Paul Jewell is manager, remain keen on Davies, who scored a dozen goals in 27 games for Derby last season.

Rams boss Nigel Clough says he will consider all options available in his search for a new striker, including a long-term loan and ideally from a Premier League club.

"We emphasised at the end of last season that some of our play in games was certainly good enough to get us a result and we just needed that bit of quality to finish moves off," said Clough.

"So if that quality comes from the Premier League on loan, it is absolutely fine by us.

"Getting a player on loan from a Premier League club can prove to be a waiting game because clubs have to decide on the make-up of their squads and who is and isn't available for loan.

"It might be well into August and may be even after the start of the season when Premier League clubs have finalised their squads.

"If a club finds itself with surplus strikers then we have to make sure we are first in line."

Derby watched Sammon a number of times when he played at Scottish club Kilmarnock, where he was a team-mate of Rams midfielder Craig Bryson.

Sammon hit 25 goals in 76 games for Kilmarnock, 53 of them starts, and his form also alerted Wigan, who pipped Derby for his signature just hours before the transfer window closed.

But the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international has found it tough to break into the first team at Wigan.

Only 10 of his 34 appearances for the Latics have been starts and his one goal came in a 3-2 victory over West Ham United in May last year.

Championship-quality front men who are better than the strikers already on Derby's books come at a price, which makes a long-term loan deal the likely avenue the Rams will take.

Following the departure of Chris Maguire to Sheffield Wednesday, Clough's current attacking options, apart from Davies, include Theo Robinson, Nathan Tyson, Jamie Ward, Callum Ball, Mason Bennett and Conor Doyle.

Derby are in the market for a central defender, following Jason Shackell's departure to Burnley, and a midfielder.

Clough would like to add both to his squad in time for when the Rams report back for pre-season training on Thursday.

Derby also remain interested in Crewe Alexandra's 21-year-old defender Kelvin Mellor.

I would be happy with signing Sammon, how much would wigwam want for the permanent deal or is it to do with wages?

I suppose he'll be on 8k at least...

Yeah might be on even more, I think Celtic and a lot of other clubs wanted him last time (including us) so I bet he went to whoever offered him the most money... 'http://www.dcfcfans.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Did Clough mention Sammon's name himself, or is it that the journalist plucked his name from previous bids we've made for a current premiership striker?

It's one of those 'the derby telegraph understands' stories. Usualy reliable.
