Calero, Hanson and Rawson promoted to the first team?

Looking at the training pictures, the severe lack of U21 players suggests to me that it was purely the immediate first team squad involved.

All the goalkeepers were involved, including Mitchell, but there was no Lowe, Klobenz, Bunjaku, Santos, Thomas...etc

It suggests to me that the three mentioned will certainly be stepped up next season.

Wassall said the u21's went back same day as the seniors with u18s on Wednesday. This suggests they train elsewhere which would make sense and therefore I'd surmise that you are correct, sir.

Clement's first day, so then Mr Wassall who is the creme of the crop, who are on the verge of making the first team that I should take a look at, well Mr Clement, take Calero, Hanson and Rawson have a butchers at them, see what you think.

Or they could be promoted to the first team.

Guessing we will still see all 3 in the U21's still, can't see where they would fit in at the moment.

They'll probably still be U21 players, but with Peacock in and Clement's experience with youths you can't rule out a jump up to the first team we aren't expecting.

Rawson did start at championship level last season quite effectively, I heard, for Rotherham. Unfortunately we know very little of the actual quality of any of them.

Clean slate, so who knows.

Rawson took to this level like a duck to water for Rotherham, earning rave reviews, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him excel with a full pre-season. Calero has the technical ability to rival Russell, in my opinion.

Right now you have Keogh, Buxton, Pearce, Albentosa, Shotton and potentially Shackell, obviously one or two may leave but I really don't see Rawson being able to break into that just yet, few games at Rotherham is a bit different to a serious promotion bid.

Calero as well as some real competition, didn't overly shine at Burton on loan either.

It's going to be hard, but ultimately Albentosa, Buxton, Pearce...etc should be looking at Rawson as serious competition too.

Clement will pick the best duo from the lot. Rawson may possibly be it. Good players have to start somewhere and it only takes a chance.

I'd have mixed feelings if Calero played more, because the signings we've made, you'd imagine, push him down the pecking order. If he's playing someone we paid money for isn't, but I'd still like to see him. Didn't impress at Burton though.

Hanson is a possibility, but no chance with a healthy Thorne. Less chance if we sign Bridcutt.

Rawson is definitely the most likely. Not a high chance, but the highest of the lot.

Can't forget Mitchell of course, but no way is he ahead of Roos.

The squad then, so far:

Goalkeepers - Carson, Grant and Roos; Left backs - Forsyth and Warnock; Right backs - Christie and Shotton; Centre backs - Keogh, Rawson, Pearce, Buxton and Albentosa; Central defensive midfielders - Thorne, Baird and Hanson; Central midfielders - Hughes, Bryson, Dawkins and Hendrick; Wide attackers - Russell, Calero and Weimann; Strikers - Martin, Sammon and Bent

I can see five in and five out from that lot.

Mitchell's training with the seniors, I imagine that's because there isn't a specialised GK coach at u21 level?

Calero did pretty well at Burton, gathered a couple of POTM awards in the month.

Fair enough, I stand corrected. Must've been thinking of someone else.

Calero - Technically gifted, doubt he could have a full game, maybe used as an impact sub

Hanson - Technically gifted, strong, intelligent and versatile, used as cover for Thorne and Baird

Rawson - Strong, Imposing, OldFashioned CB who could well make an impact this season especially with injuries

What's happened to Mason Bennett? Would of at least expected him to be given the chance to grab one of the attacking spots

A lot of injuries to be fair but also I suppose just seemingly little development. Plenty of time for him obviously but he doesn't appear to be able to reach the next level.

I mean I'll be fair to him, the loan spells he's had have been rubbish because it's been a month or two here and there. And his injuries have been a frustration...

But 3 goals in 47 club appearances now actually... I know a lot of them are 'last 10 minutes " of a game but still makes bad reading. U21s last season he scored 2 and assisted 1 in 10 games, 8 of which were starts. He actually only finished 4 of those games. Question is, why was he being taken off after an hour so often? Two goals given the stop start season isn't too bad but it doesn't really show a player absolutely tearing up the U21s does it?

I'm trying to find how many of those 47 club games over the years were starts but I can't find that. Fairly sure he's played a fair few 90 minutes though.

I hope so too. He's got decent potential, hopefully will flourish under two coaches who are well known for their ability to work with young players.

Bennett was ever-present for England under Peacock. He will obviously know him quite well.

I still feel he's down in the pecking order, mind.

He could play in a two upfront, but not a one, and out wide he has: Weimann, Russell, Dawkins, Calero ahead of him before anyone else comes in.

The fact he isn't training with the first team speaks volumes. If anyone in our squad needs a decent loan move then it's him.
