Mick Harford
In another forum I go on (WSC) they are talking about matches postponed due to fog. Now, I seem to remember an FA Cup tie called off in 92 against Burnley, but can find no record of this, does anyone else remember it or is my memory going? Also notable as I believe Mark Patterson broke his leg in the (or one) of the game (s) and the Burnley fans chanting "Jimmy Mullens Claret and Blue Army" for the entire duration of the game and some 20 minutes afterwards. Guest
I was there ......called off in second half ......sat near half way line in Coop/Ley Stand. Many funny chants including "the fog is going up, are you gonna believe us" it swirled around ...just players could not always see from end to the other, even though a times each goal was clear Patterson had scored a screamer from right back to put us 2 nil up from memory, so he "lost" that goal Due to pitch freezing over in Jan 1997 we had FA Cup game at Gillingham away postponed after circa 70minutes I was so pissed I wondered why all players were heading to touchline when a goal kick was about to be taken.......goal kick taken, all players ran off. I would think there are fewer occasions of a game ever being called off for a frozen pitch ... I never felt the cold even though stood on an uncovered terrace ...was a little too merry! We won the replay thru RVDL on another cold night !
ivo_knoflicek
Didn't Patterson get stretchered off too? I recall thinking that he lost the goal but not the injury.
Mick Harford
Cheers! I was there as well, was the season I sold programmes whilst still at school, I just couldn't find any mention of it online at all so was worried my mind was playing tricks. Only other game I went to that was called off was one new year away at Newport, got about 5 minutes into the game,
Guest
http://www.clarets-mad.co.uk/feat/ed23/derby_county_v_burnley__fa_cup_3rd_round_replay_saturday_25th_january_1992_22020/index.shtml Replay was on the Saturday ...... is all I can find online http://www.clarets-mad.co.uk/roll/ed91/a_day_to_remember_at_derby_despite_a_cup_defeat_724931/index.shtml the first Replay was actually stopped after 76minutes!!! I guess as they were from the then Division Four we were not unduly worried We scored an early goal from mark Stallard making one of his first starts for us in the first game at Burnley. Their ground had a massive terrace, stood as high up as our current stands, and ran length of touchline
Mick Harford
Their fans were amazing, I remember their constant chanting. Closest I have seen was us away at Crystal Palace in the last promotion season when we realised we were not going to get automatic, just a constant "We are Derby, Super Derby" for about 40 mins. My Palace supporting mates say we were the best away fans for a while at Selhurst. Those articles are brilliant, thanks.
Archie
I remember all 3 of the Burnley FA Cup games - away game right at the back of the huge terrace that ran part way down the touchline..Best pie i've ever eaten at a football ground that day! Still can visualise the cross coming over from the far side, perhaps Martin Chalk and Stallard heading in from the 6 yard line - really early goal too, perhaps in first 5 minutes? We had a young team out that day. For the postponed replay I was in the Columbo terrace, the fog came in from nowhere, could barely see half the pitch. Nobody wanted a third replay so we tried a whole manner of things to lift the fog - at one point all the lighters came out lighting up the whole terrace, was quite a spectacle..then thousands of people blowing (like that would work!) releasing a pungent smell of beer, oxo, chips, fags etc. Then singing, Burnley were good but we gave it a good go as well. In the columbo end then 'Arthur Cox's black and white army, we're not mad, we're fu(King barmy' brought out a lot of jumping about, surging, some even being passed over head to the back. Great days. t'oldu
Rumour had it that if we had lost that night Cox had his resignation speech prepared / would be sacked. By the time we replayed the game Burnley had several of their main players out injured. I remember standing at the players gate as they were going in and telling Gabbi they had better lose! He knew what I meant.........
Bridgford Ram
I think Patterson scored in the first game and got stretchered off in the replayed fixture. The fog was doubly hard on him. I seem to remember and announcement saying they would give the fog a certain amount of time to clear, only to postpone it before the time limit. The fog then cleared. My dad tells a story about a Derby keeper, probably Colin Boulton, who was playing on a foggy day. After a while someone came to fetch him and told him that the game had been abandoned ages ago. Not sure if that is a myth.
Guest
There was some controversy over the time allowed for players to be off pitch. I think exact time was not announced to crowd, and was Arthur who complained as well as radio derby y ref had indicated he would have given it longer. It was cold as well, and I guess after 60 minutes of not seeing ball or players at other end of pitch the fans decided to head for home :-)
