Trolling

Internet trolls could face up to two years in jail under new laws, Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has said.

He told the Mail on Sunday quadrupling the current maximum six-month term showed his determination to "take a stand against a baying cyber-mob".

The plan was announced days after TV presenter Chloe Madeley suffered online abuse, which Mr Grayling described as "crude and degrading".

She has welcomed the proposed laws but said social media should be regulated.

Social media 'venom'

Under the new measures, magistrates could pass serious cases on to crown courts.

Mr Grayling told the newspaper: "These internet trolls are cowards who are poisoning our national life.

"No-one would permit such venom in person, so there should be no place for it on social media. That is why we are determined to quadruple the current six-month sentence."

Miss Madeley received threats after defending her mother Judy Finnigan's comments on a rape committed by footballer Ched Evans, which she said was "non-violent" and did not cause "bodily harm".

Richard Madeley has said "prosecution awaits" those who sent "sick rape threats" to his daughter.

The justice secretary said: "As the terrible case of Chloe Madeley showed last week, people are being abused online in the most crude and degrading fashion.

"This is a law to combat cruelty - and marks our determination to take a stand against a baying cyber-mob.

"We must send out a clear message - if you troll you risk being behind bars for two years."

They need to sort out what a 'troll' is first - is it someone who posts on a forum to disrupt, is it someone who disagrees with something and has an opinion, or is it someone who is threatening and posts abuse/racial/hatecrime/death threats....seems like a lot of people have been accused of being a troll - when all they do, is disagree and have an opinion.

One lady, is dead because of it......

There really are some vindictive, malicious and spiteful people out there, who's sick thoughts go beyond the normal realms of expressing an opinion.

Mrsram is right, people should apply a bit of rational thought and distinguish if what they're saying is perhaps a badly worded opinion, or is from someone who thinks they can abuse, threaten or make awful personal comments about anyone they please without fear of the consequences because they think they can hide. Cowardly internet bullies who don't seem to grasp what is acceptable.

Each case is different, people respond differently to what others see as a simple throw-away comment but to be labelled a troll when you're not as we've seen can be devastating.

Wouldn't it be ideal if everyone just stopped and thought about what they're posting before pressing the button?

Imagine if everyone ignored trolling?

It wouldn't be an instant "fix" but they feed off attention, if people keep giving it to them they will continue. Do you know how many women I have got rid of by ignoring them? It really works.

Look at footballers tweets, won't take you long to find one where someone is calling them a useless rick with a p in front, footballer replies then they claim it was all banter and just wanted a reply.

Social media sites should have a higher mimimum age requirement as well, sorry kids but 21 at least when the brain starts to age. Not saying it's all kids but a lot are.

I'll stop there before I go into a full on I remember Twitter before the kids got hold of it rant.

Personally don't have any kids (youngest is my 16 yr old) following me on Twitter but they really shouldn't be on it until they're much older, there's some stuff what they're not mentally equipped to see, although many would disagree with me.

Youngsters think they know everything these days but what innocence they do have left should be protected.

They wouldn't follow me anyway, I'm far too boring. That suits me.

My sister opened accounts for her daughters on Facebook to play games when they was like 9 or 10, without telling her what I really thought I did say I was surprised to see them on there.....oh they only play games, got fed up of them using my account. What did kids do before Facebook?? Wasn't long before they were liking 1D pages and adding friends. Mental, really is.

Needs to be 18 or 21+, think about the kids that might still be alive if it wasn't for Facebook? Really is shocking but I guess they need their numbers to sell the ads.
